Vocal leads are extremely popular in EDM right now, which is why you probably should know of this technique. Little alterboy actually makes it really simple to create, but if you’re a beginner, this guide will probably help you on your way to become a better producer.
- The first step, and probably the hardest part, is to find a vocal phrase or melody to start off with. This could be something like the one I’m using in the video above (a short phrase out of the acapella of Justin Bieber – Sorry) or something you’ve made yourself.
- Once you’ve found the vocal phrase you want to use, make sure to trim the edges. It’s really important to not have any pop:s or artifacts in the sample. In FL Studio you can use the samplers own fade in and outs by double clicking the sample and choose some of the “declicking” options.
- Now route the sample into the mixer and add Little alterboy as an effect.
- In my example I’m pitching up the sample a few semitones inside little alterboy. This is just a stylistic choice. The important part is the formant shift. Drag it up a few notches until it sounds good.
- Now add some distortion, aka. drive. Somewhere around 75% usually sounds great, but you can make it sound however you like.
- That’s all for little alterboy. Now add an EQ and remove any unwanted low and high frequencies that might have been increased through little alterboy.
- Route the first channel into a new fresh one, and make the first one mono. Why do we do this you may ask? Well, there are two reasons. The first one is that many acapellas may have some reverb that interfere with little alterboy in weird ways and creates a weird stereo field. The second one is that little alterboy itself creates some weird stereo artifacts when working with the formant option.
- Add a reverb on the second fresh channel. This reverb should be pretty short (<1 s decay) and very wet (80% – 100% wet) which creates a really nice roomy stereo wide effect.
- Add an EQ on this second channel and once again remove any unwanted low and high frequencies that may have been added though the effect chain.
- Add a second reverb. This reverb should be longer (3-4 s decay) and less wet (20% – 40 %). This step is optional, but by doing this the sound will sound bigger.
